Eat a well-balanced diet

Eating well before a game gives your body the right nutrients and energy it needs to enable you to perform to your best. You should stick to lean proteins, such as fish or chicken. Try to stay away from red meats, as these contain a lot of fat and can make you feel lethargic. Complex carbs such as whole wheat and brown rice are great for energy, but stay away from stodgier carbs such as white bread and pasta.

Stay hydrated

In addition to staying hydrated during the game, you should keep up your water intake in the days leading up to it. Caffeine and other sugary drinks should be cut back so that you don’t feel tired. Try to drink around half an ounce of water for every pound of your body weight.

Warm up well

On the day of the game, it is time to get on with some field hockey drills. These can help with dynamic stretches that will improve your performance during the game. Field hockey drills also prevent you from cramping muscles and injuries during the game. If you are not sure what field hockey drills you should use during your warm-ups, ask your coach or use an online guide to help you warm up properly.

Visualise your moves

Don’t make the game the one key focus of your thoughts, but try to visualise the passes, hits and flicks you want to use during your match. Thinking about the movements triggers a mirror neuron in your brain that helps you to feel more confident and motivated on game day.

Get some rest

An ample amount of sleep helps you both mentally and physically so that you can play your best out on the field. You want to feel refreshed and ready to go on game day. Not getting enough rest and sleep will slow down your reaction times, which could majorly affect your performance in hockey.
